When you watched cartoons as a kid, like Disney movies, you thought the hero was untouchable, and would always win at the end. This cathegory will put you into doubt.
A martyr is a character that suffers many near-death experiences, and (almost) lethal injuries. Actually, they sometimes go through so much pain (some even lose body parts) that the audience starts to wonder whether they'll survive.
Do not mix Tragic heroes and Martyrs. While the first cathegory suffers psychological torments, the other suffers physical pains. For example, a Disney hero is often tragic, but less often a Martyr (to avoid chocking young viewers).
